Theme settings: Age gate

Theme settings → Age gate can show a full-page confirmation before shoppers browse. Use it only when your policies require age confirmation — it is not a substitute for legal review or ID verification apps.

Sales channels > Online Store > Themes > Customize > Theme settings > Age gate

Setup

1. Enable the age gate toggle.
2. Choose the minimum age copy (for example 18+ or 21+).
3. Edit confirm / decline button labels if needed.
4. Save and preview in an Incognito window so the stored consent cookie is empty.

Behavior

• Confirm stores a cookie so returning visitors skip the gate for a period.
• Decline typically sends shoppers away or shows a blocked message — verify the path you configured.
• Password-protected stores still show the Shopify password page first.

Accessibility

• Buttons must remain keyboard-focusable; do not rely on motion alone.
• Keep contrast high on the overlay against your brand colors.
• Screen readers should announce the dialog as a blocking prompt.

Troubleshooting

• Gate never appears — confirm enable is on, and clear site cookies for your store domain.
• Gate every visit — cookie blocked by browser privacy settings; test another browser.
• Need stricter verification — use a dedicated age-verification app; this gate is confirmation-only.
